Sioux

                                                                        The Sioux
The Sioux is one of the most interesting Native American groups in our country. They were fierce warriors and they also have an extremely rich culture and history. About 3,000 years ago the Sioux came to North America from Asia (Sioux Indians). The name Sioux means "little snake" and was given to them by the Chippewa Indians  (Sioux Indians). They never truly settled anywhere because they followed the buffalo. This means they were nomadic. The Sioux got a reservation from the government in the 1860's. When people thought that there may be gold on Sioux land there was more battles over it. In the Battle of Custer's Last Stand the Sioux killed all the troops, but they would later lose the Battle of Wounded Knee (Sioux Indians). Today the Sioux live in South Dakota mostly but they also reside in Nebraska, Montana, and Canada (Sioux Indians).
The Sioux at first had many different languages but in the 19th century they typically spoke English. They wore clothes that they got from animals such as deer, elk, and buffalo (Sioux Tribes). Although the Sioux were nomadic and hunter gatherers they did also plant corn. Before guns the Sioux hunted buffalo by setting fires that would lead them into traps or over cliffs. (Sioux Tribes). The Sioux believed that the universe was incomprehensible and that mankind was born from the womb of mother universe (Sioux Religion). The basically ate whatever they hunted on the prairie, grew, or picked. They also lived in tipis.

Sioux children were given nicknames throughout their life which they earned by doing courageous acts or by being skilled at something (Sioux Kids). Sioux kids were never spanked or physically punished. They instead were given a stern look and that usually straightened them out. They also weren't ever that bad for fear that they would get an embarrassing nickname (Sioux Kids). The boys were
taught by their fathers and the girls by their mothers.
The Battle of Wounded Knee is also known as the massacre of Wounded Knee. It happened in the year 1890 and 150 Sioux died. It happened soon after the battle of Custer's Last Stand It was the last violent conflict that the government had with the Sioux.
